Signs It’s Time for a New Heat Pump

Heat pumps are an economical way to heat and cool your Tucson, Arizona, home. However, just like any precision equipment, they eventually wear out. If your heat pump is more than 10 years old and is not performing as well as it used to, you may wonder whether it is better to repair or replace it. According to Energy Star, some telltale signs indicate when replacement is a better option.

More Frequent Repairs

If your heat pump is out of warranty, is approaching the upper end of the expected service life and needs frequent repairs, it may be time for a new one. If you are not sure about the cost-effectiveness, experts recommend applying the $5,000 rule. Multiply the projected cost of repairs by the age of the unit. If the total is more than $5,000, replacement may be more cost-effective. For example, a 10-year-old system needing repairs costing $700 comes to $7,000. In this case, replacement may be a better option.

Talk with your heating, ventilation and air conditioning contractor about the condition and effectiveness of your current system. Because new systems come with generous warranties, you will save on repair bills during the warranty period.

Higher Utility Bills

Even well-maintained heat pumps lose efficiency over time. If your utility bills are higher than usual, have your system evaluated. New models with variable speed motors and higher SEER ratings are more cost-effective to run. Your HVAC contractor can run a cost-ratio analysis to show you the payback period for systems that operate more efficiently.

Inconsistent Heating and Cooling

Heat pumps are better at controlling humidity and maintaining consistent temperatures than traditional HVAC equipment. A drop in comfort is a sign that your heat pump is not operating effectively. Check that the air filter is clean, air vents are clear and thermostat settings are correct. If you have not had an annual tune-up, schedule a maintenance session to ensure the system is operating properly. If there is no improvement, a replacement may be in order.
