Many service calls that an HVAC company receives in the winter in Catalina Foothills, AZ, relate to a lack of maintenance. Three of the most common winter heating problems are inadequate heating, high energy bills and strange noises.
1. Inadequate Heating
A faulty thermostat can cause your heating system not to heat your home, so you might not need a heating system replacement in this situation. Changing the thermostat’s batteries may work. If it doesn’t, then something else may be wrong with your heating system.
Other possible reasons behind inadequate heating are a dirty air filter, a broken blower fan, dirty or corroded burners and a heating element failure. You should change the air filter on a monthly basis to prevent it from becoming too dirty.
2. High Energy Bills
Even during the coldest month of the year, your heating system shouldn’t cause excessively high energy bills. A big increase in your energy bill means your heating system either needs repair or maintenance. If you already schedule maintenance for your heating system once a year and change the air filter monthly, then most likely it’s a repair need.
3. Strange Noises
Aging heating systems may begin to make strange noises, but you shouldn’t shrug off these noises as just “an old heating system.” Unusual sounds from the heating system indicate it needs repair. Some problems are major, so you don’t want to delay.
Banging noises indicate that there is a broken part or something is disconnected. Your heating system may sustain more damage if you do not contact a repair company. Other sounds your heating system shouldn’t make include scraping, rattling and squealing.
